"On entering from the street the rather ancient and dilapidated stairwell towering above us looked a little forbidding at first but this is a historical city after all and these inner courtyards, which inevitably show the signs of the many years they've travelled through, make up part of its special character: when we got to the top floor though, we found that the room itself was modern, bright and high-ceilinged and there was a view out over the sea and the port with the big cruise ships and smaller ferries."
